Please note that the color on your screen may vary from the actual product. Minor changes and slight inclusions of natural fiber on the surface are evidence of 100% natural origin of the material.

Which thickness should I order?

FilzFelt felts are available in five thicknesses and each thickness is appropriate for different uses. Below is a list of common applications by thickness.

2mm: Architectural Installations, Drapery, Lifestyle + Home Goods, Upholstery, Wrapped Wall Panels + Tackboards
3mm: Architectural Installations, Lifestyle + Home Goods, Wallcovering, Wrapped Wall Panels + Tackboards
5mm: Architectural Installations, Floor Coverings, Hanging Panels, Lifestyle + Home Goods, Seat Pads, Wallcovering
8mm: Architectural Installations, Hanging Panels, Seat Pads, Wallcovering
10mm: Architectural Installations, Hanging Panels, Seat Pads, Wallcovering

What is the width of the felt?

FilzFelt goods are approximately 180 cm (70 3/4 inches) wide for 2mm, 3mm, and 5mm thickness and 160 cm (63 inches) for 8mm and 10mm.

What length increments are available?

Our 100% Wool Design Felt is available to purchase by the linear yard or linear meter. A minimum of one yard or one meter is required however increments of 0.25 are available beyond the minimum. A full bolt includes approximately 22–25 linear meters (24–27 linear yards) for 2mm, 3mm and 5mm thickness and approximately 15–17 linear meters (17–19 linear yards) for 8mm and 10mm.

To purchase by the linear meter, please download our Price List and contact Customer Service.

Is there consistency in thickness and color between dye lots?

Product color is only indicative, as it is not possible to assure consistency of color in a natural product. There will be variation in color and thickness between dyelots or production runs as well as within felt bolts or leather hides. In addition, inclusions of natural fiber on the surface of wool felt is evidence of the 100% natural origin of the material. Color variation is attributed to the natural color of the raw material and variations in structure, which affect how much dye is absorbed; therefore color matching cannot be guaranteed on shipments. Color variation will be more pronounced beyond the normal commercial range for all products.

What is the discoloration on the felt?

Sheep are free roaming animals and vegetable matter can be caught in their fleece. Washing and carbonizing removes some of this debris, however, minor changes and slight inclusions of natural fiber on the surface are evidence of 100% natural origin of the material. In addition, sheep may be marked with pigment for various reasons including isolation for illness or breeding. Colors that include any non-carbonized (washed) wool content may retain these pigments as pink or blue dots. This condition is most apparent in natural colors, however, may be visible in uni and melange colors where the felt may appear lighter or darker.

Are custom colors available?

You betcha! If you’d like to produce your own custom felt color, colors 100 Wollweiß, 150 Weiß and 170 Asche are dye ready and friendly. Want us to do it? Please refer to our Price List for pricing and minimums required.

How is 100% Wool Design Felt installed?

FilzFelt felts may be direct-glued to any porous surface including wood and gypsum wallboard and do not require a backing material. When using the direct glue method to attach to a substrate, it is advisable to use 3mm, 5mm, 8mm or 10mm thick felts. Wool is naturally hydrophilic and can absorb up to one-third of its weight in water. Due to this inherent quality, we DO NOT advise the use of 2mm felt as the adhesive can absorb through and become visible on the surface. The installation of 100% Wool Design Felt as a direct-glue application is a specialized skill as it’s a natural material. An installer who has experience working with natural materials (such as leather, cork, or felt) is recommended. To aid in finding skilled craftsmen to install 100% Wool Design Felt, please call Customer Service to receive a list of recommend installers.

How is 100% Wool Design Felt maintained and cleaned?

Your FilzFelt product is made from 100% wool (not a wool blend) and therefore is not suitable for washer + dryer cleaning. While the core of a wool fiber is capable of absorbing up to a third of its dry weight in moisture, the surface has a waxy coating that repels liquids. Water droplets on the surface will bead and roll off instead of being absorbed into the fabric. If soiling should occur, please spot clean with warm soapy water or clean with a mild, water-free dry cleaning solvent. Be careful not to saturate the felt with moisture as the milling process will continue and may result in a misshapen appearance. For specific cleaning instructions, please visit Downloads.

Does 100% Wool Design Felt contribute to LEED©, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, certification?

Yes, it sure does. 100% Wool Design Felt contributes to LEED© MR Credit 6: Rapidly Renewable Materials – One (1) year harvest cycle. For more information, please contact Customer Service.

How can felt be cut?

Felt cuts the cleanest with a sharp utility knife and straight edge or ruler. For best results, change blades frequently to avoid any stretching and be aware that multiple passes may be required to completely sever the material. Felt can also be die-cut, laser, or CNC cut depending on your needs. Since it is a nonwoven material, edges cut cleanly and can be left raw, without finishing. FilzFelt offers CNC cut and Roll cut Design Felt. Please visit Products for more information.

Do I need an industrial sewing machine to work with felt?

Depending on the size and strength of your sewing machine and the thickness of felt, you may need to make adjustments to your machine to work with our felt. For example, using a heavy-duty needle and replacing it frequently is highly beneficial. Industrial strength machines are recommended for sewing, but are not always necessary.
